Water damage claims are common and can be very expensive. The longer the water sits in your home the more problems it can cause due to mold and bacteria growth. Standing water can also damage furniture and cause drywall to rot. Below are a few steps you can take to help prevent having water damage in your home.

  • Make sure you know where and how to shut off your home’s water
  • If you’re going to be away from your home for an extended period of time, turn off the water to your home.
  • When below freezing temperatures are expected, take steps to prevent freezing and bursting pipes. Leave cabinet doors open, leave a faucet dripping, use heat tape to keep pipes warm.
  • Have a professional fix any damaged pipes immediately to prevent any leaking or bursting pipes
  • Check your appliances’ water lines regularly for damage
  • Check your gutters and make sure they are draining water properly away from the foundation of your home
